• This was a really fun day until the descent down off of Volcano.
  • Old Baldy was a mostly straightforward ascent up the creek then up to the pass. Light scrambling to the summit.
  • Scree skiing off of Old Baldy down to McDougall was also great, the ridge is wide and easy travel, despite how it looks from the summit of Old Baldy.
  • You maintain on the ridge almost all the way to Volcano, where you drop off and skirt around a bit. Type 1 fun all around.
  • Then it gets awful. Descending Volcano is slow due to lichen covered loose talus, it’s manageable, but challenging. Then you reach trees and have to bushwhack to through a burn area covered in downed trees. Maybe there’s a trail through here, but we didn’t find it.

Descending Old Baldy towards Mount McDougall, Volcano peak is the small bump to the right.

Looking back at Old Baldy, it looks steeper than it is. The ridge is also wider than it looks. There’s a easy-to-follow path the whole way.

We eventually had to leave the ridge on the way to Volcano.

Lichen-covered loose talus on the descent.
